Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and teams etc)

"Leeds United's Dublin-based following clearly have too much of a good thing and a near capacity 9,000 crowd at Tolka Park last night were rewarded with an often skilful, highly competitive encounter in which Shelbourne compared well in terms of technique before superior fitness and experiencewore them down.".

"Much attention was on Eric Cantona, who despite his recent inactivity, looked particularly sharp inside the area in his first full game for three months. Though tall it is the French striker's technique which so impresses and it forced Leeds to adopt a more continental approach than has sometimes been the case when the injured Lee Chapman operated as target man."

"Not that this was much bother to the effervescent Gordon Strachan, the nimble Gary Speed or the languid Gary McAllister and Shelbourne (with Tony McCarthy a proverbial rock at the back) were forced to defend in numbers and with discipline and Mark Rutherford's willingness to run with the ball always offered them encouragement on the break."

"After Speed had an early score disallowed Shelbourne continued to survive precariously through their offside trap and the unlucky Cantona was first denied by a linesman's flag in the thirty-eighth minute and then by Jody Byrne's reflexes and the left upright in the second half."

"Shelbourne too had their moments, Gary Haylock and Greg Costello were unable to convert excellent crosses by Rutherford and Bobby Browne in either half before Leeds finally broke the home side's resistance in the sixty-sixth minute. Chris Whyte nodded on Strachan's corner at the near post for fellow central defender Chris Fairclough to score at the far post. Speed added the second after seventy-four minutes with unerringly drilling home a low cross by Strachan on the run."
